A community for your next professional step
Professional organisations can connect you with peers, education, technical discussions and opportunities to contribute. Start with a concrete need: improving a skill, understanding a field, finding collaborators or contributing to good practice.
This directory covers all the organisations discussed in this learning collection. It is a curated starting point, not an exhaustive worldwide register or an endorsement of every service. Descriptions summarise official sources; suggested relevance to a role is editorial guidance.
Understand what you are joining
- Professional societies and institutes: focus on people, disciplines and professional development.
- Industry associations: generally represent companies and sector interests; participation may be through your employer.
- Standards communities: develop consensus documents and offer routes to contribute technical expertise.
- Federations and umbrella organisations: connect member societies or institutions, rather than necessarily offering direct individual membership.
Categories can overlap. Check current eligibility, fees, languages, location, access conditions and event scope on the official website. Membership does not by itself demonstrate competence or establish product compliance. Training and certification may have separate conditions and charges.

Combination products and cross-sector collaboration
Work involving medicines, delivery devices, diagnostics and digital technologies crosses professional boundaries. MPP — Medtech & Pharma Platform is a particularly relevant starting point for exchange across those sectors. Its Swiss directory entry describes its European industry focus. SwAPP can complement this with life-sciences professional development; RAPS and TOPRA offer broader regulatory communities.
For a drug-delivery project, combine this perspective with systems engineering and human factors. No single association covers every technical, clinical and regulatory responsibility.
Start with your role
- Systems and development: consider INCOSE or SSSE alongside SSBE or IEEE EMBS. MTL-210 — Systems engineers.
- Quality and regulatory: compare AAMI, RAPS, TOPRA, ASQ, CQI and SAQ according to your actual responsibilities. Explore the role-based learning directory.
- Human factors: explore HFES, CIEHF and SwissErgo, checking the healthcare relevance of particular activities.
- IVD development: consider ADLM and CLSI for laboratory and diagnostic practice, with SVDI/ASID for Swiss industry collaboration.
- Clinical investigations: compare ACRP and SOCRA, with SwAPP where its clinical and life-sciences learning fits.
- Cybersecurity: consider ISC2 or ISACA for broader professional development alongside device-specific learning. MTL-109 — Medical-device cybersecurity.
- Business and industry engagement: consider the appropriate national association, MedTech Europe or AdvaMed; include MPP when combined products are central.
Short exercise: build your professional-development plan
Select two organisations: one close to your current work and one that fills a gap. For each, record the skill or question you want to address, one relevant resource or event, participation requirements, time and cost, and one concrete next action.
Compare your approach
A systems engineer working on a drug-delivery device might explore an SSSE technical event to strengthen systems practice and an MPP activity to understand cross-sector product challenges. Before joining, check the agenda, audience and whether participation is individual or through the employer. After the activity, identify one improvement to discuss with the project team.
Done criterion: you can explain why each community fits your needs and name a realistic next action. Review what you gained after three months; attendance alone is not the goal.
